I think of all the times Grace and I met for coffee to work on her book. How sometimes she was greeted with looks that signalled unease or discomfort, sometimes an unfriendly or even outright hostile stare. How some cashiers were unable to look at Grace, and a few couldn’t seem to hear her when she gave her order. How rare it was for someone to smile at her and say, “Hi, how are you?”

Grace always appeared to take this in stride, to not be bothered by it. To not even notice. But now I realize that’s not how it is at all. She has noticed and taken in every unfriendly or hostile glance, every reaction that tells her she’s invisible or unwanted. And she’s concluded, logically I think, that her truth is too scary.

I feel a deep sadness mixed with guilt. Sad that Grace has been treated this way. That she feels that her truth needs to be hidden. And guilt because I’ve been someone who looked away, who couldn’t see the person in front of me. How many people like Grace have I made feel the way Grace feels?
